SAPF Announces the 2009 Young Musicians Competition as part of its 2009-10 season!
INFORMATION AND REGULATIONS

Dates: The competition will be held on Sunday, November 22, 2009, in the Carr Education-Fine Arts building at Angelo State University located at 2602 Dena Drive, San Angelo, Texas.
Eligibility: The Young Musicians Competition is open to music students living in or studying with a teacher residing in the Concho Valley (Coke, Concho, Crockett, Irion, Kimble, Mason, McCulloch, Menard, Reagan, Schleicher, Sterling, Sutton, and Tom Green Counties).
Categories: There are three categories for each age division
Junior Division (Grades 4-8): Piano, Strings, Woodwinds/Brass
Senior Division (Grades 9-12): Piano Strings, Woodwinds/Brass
Prizes: Winners in each Junior Division will receive a cash prize of $150, and winners in each Senior Division will receive a cash prize of $200. In addition, all winners in each category will perform at the 6th San Angelo Piano Festival Festival Finale to be held March 28, 2010 at 2:30pm.
The Gene Chartier Smith Performance Prize:
The winner of each senior division also wins the unique opportunity to perform a live audition for San Angelo Symphony Conductor Maestro Héctor Guzmán. At the discretion of Maestro Guzmán, one of these winners may be awarded the Gene Chartier Smith Performance Prize – the opportunity to perform with the San Angelo Symphony Orchestra in its Youth Concerts on February 5, 2009, at the San Angelo City Auditorium.
This award will be granted only to an outstanding winner of a Senior Division, and will carry an additional $100 cash prize to be presented on the day of the concerts.

Additional Regulations:
1. Junior Division piano contestants will perform one complete movement of a Student Concerto (accompanied by second piano). Please see the list of suggested repertoire. Concerti not on this list must be approved by the Competition Chair prior to application submission.
2. Junior Division strings and woodwinds/brass contestants will perform one complete movement of any solo piece WITH piano accompaniment.
3. Senior Division piano and string contestants will perform one complete movement of a concerto from the approved repertoire list (accompanied by second piano). Please see the list of repertoire.
4. Senior Division woodwinds/brass contestants will perform one complete movement of a standard concerto in the repertoire. Selections must be approved by the Competition Chair prior to application submission.
5. A student in the 4th – 8th grade may compete in the Senior Division if able to competently perform a movement from one of the Standard Concerti in the Senior Division repertoire.
6. Selections must be performed from memory.
7. In the case that a performance exceeds the allotted time, the judges may stop the performance.
8. All works must be accompanied by piano. The contestant may provide his or her own accompanist, or can request one for an additional fee of $50.
9. An original copy of the score must be provided for the judges; photocopies will not be allowed.
10. If an applicant is awarded the Gene Chartier Smith Performance Prize, he/she will not be eligible to re-enter the competition until the third year after receiving this award. For example, if a 14-year-old 8th grader enters in the Senior Division and wins the Gene Chartier Smith Performance Prize, he/she may not re-enter the competition until the 11th grade, at age 17.
11. Winners of the senior division who are NOT awarded the Gene Chartier Smith Performance Prize are eligible to enter the competition again the following year.
12. The winner of the Gene Chartier Smith Performance Prize must be available for a rehearsal with orchestra on February 4, 2010, as well as the performances on February 5, 2010.
13. Competitors may enter more than one category on a different instrument.
14. If an application is accepted and the applicant withdraws or fails to compete, the application fee is not refundable.
15. Applications must be postmarked by October 17, 2009. In the case that applications exceed the number of allowable applicants, the applications will be accepted in the order they were received. Those not accepted will have their application fees and materials returned.
